4.2. Vocal groups

Vocal music can be either just with voices ("a capella") or with voices accompanied by instruments. In both cases, voices can be grouped in different ways:


4.2.1. Soloist singer

It consists of just one voice. It is usual for the soloist to be accompanied by other instruments or by a band or an orchestra.


4.2.2. Small groups



  • Duos and trios: consist of two and three voices respectively. These voices can be equal or different.


  • Quartet: a group of four voices. The most common setting is the "mixed quartet" formed by soprano, contralto, tenor, and bass. 

  • Quintet: this setup is quite versatile, and many vocal groups have five members. Below you can enjoy some music by a very interesting and famous quintet: Pentatonix.






4.2.3. Choirs

A choir has many voices, often divided into parts. Choirs can be formed by male voices, female voices, children's voices or mixed voices.

The distribution in parts in a four-part mixed choir is the following: sopranos, contraltos, tenors and basses.
